"La Table Commune" - The Dark Side of Beer

The Dark Side of Beer

Firefly Fine Wines and Ales - Maple Ridge

Beer is often seen as a rather simple beverage, pale gold in color and a cheap drink to knock back at the pub or while watching the big game. The styles of beer vary greatly, and as a drink to pair with food, it can be equal to wine in many cases. Many people are put off by a dark beer, as they think it is heavy and bitter, but this is a great opportunity to try out the brown and the black stuff and find out what you have been missing.

The great brewing nations of the world all have something to offer from the lighter bodied, more refreshing beers to the full-bodied meal in a glass. Whether Old world European nations or the best craft brews of North America, dark beer has made a comeback in recent years, and is being drunk in greater amounts than it has for many years.

Join us with our resident beer expert as we travel the nations of Ireland, Great Britain, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, United States, and Canada and discuss the darker side of beer. We will learn why some beers are darker than others and how the process of making darker beers differs from those of paler beers.

Date: Wed, Oct 27th

Time: 7pm - 9pm

Cost: $35

This seminar is limited to 12 seats and is a first come, first served basis. Please call 604-467-1956 with your credit card details to reserve your seat. Alternatively you can purchase tickets in person at the store or by Email to ebray@fireflyfinewinesandales.com with your name, phone number and number of tickets.

"Table Commune" series comes to Maple Ridge!

In France, La Table Commune (communal table) invites strangers to eat and drink together. We believe this tradition is the best way to experience new flavours. We are excited to announce a new series of tastings, workshops and seminars around our “table commune” in the Maple Ridge.

These events will provide us with the opportunity to share our experiences, knowledge and passion for fine wines and ales. Plus, it's a great time and a chance to be introduced to new bottles and new friends. Join us at one of the events below to taste some amazing wines and ales in a unpretentious atmosphere around the “table commune” (and learn a little along the way).

Please visit our main website for further details.

Beer of the Week-North Coast 'Old Stock Ale'

The North Coast Brewing Company have produced a multi award-winning ale that will not only impress now with its depth of flavour and complexity, but age and develop as well!
This is one for the serious beer lover, and it will keep the chill out during those Autumnal evenings! It has a full-bodied flavour with vinous notes and layers of dried fruit. With age this beer will develop more complexity and roundness. So why not buy a four-pack and drink a couple now and save two for next year?

Wine of the Week-Blasted Church 'Mixed Blessings'

This blend of Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay from the much praised Blasted Church Winery in the Okanagan  exhibits lush notes of pineapple, ripe apples with hints of pear and banana. It's fruity, fresh and a lively aperitif wine, or equally at home paired with Salmon, Tuna, or roast pork.

Wine of the Week

Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc

Dog Point is the epitome of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc; this has all the lovely melon, guava and passionfruit you expect of a Marlborough sauvignon blanc but it also has complexity with funky pungent hints of mineral and smokiness, savoury undertones and a bright, well-balanced finish.
