Wine of the Week - MHFE 2008 Cabernet Merlot
One of the world's most influential wine critics, James Suckling has just started to explore Canadian wines. In a recent trip to Montreal, James tried close to 100 wines from the best wineries from BC and Ontario. One of the standout wineries was Mission Hill Family Estate located in West Kelown BC in the Okanagan Valley.
The 2007 Oculus which will arrive at Firefly shortly, was awarded 95 points and was the best wine of the tasting.
The 2008 Five Vineyards Cabernet was awarded 92 points, and it is less than $17/bottle. It is a blend of 47% Merlot, 28% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot. Blackberry, black cherry and plummy tones on the nose with hints of currants and sandalwood.
"Very polished and long. This is an incredible value" James Suckling

Fort Berens Winery Lillooet B.C.
Fort Berens Estate Winery is owned and operated by Rolf de Bruin and Heleen Pannekoek.
Originally from the Netherlands, they wanted to rid themselves of the stress of the congestion in all aspects of their lives. They investigated a life-long dream to live and work on a farm. Their affinity with wine brought them to the idea of a vineyard and winery.
Originally from the Netherlands, they wanted to rid themselves of the stress of the congestion in all aspects of their lives. They investigated a life-long dream to live and work on a farm. Their affinity with wine brought them to the idea of a vineyard and winery.
Lillooet is one of the Hot spots in Canada, the average summer temperatures are slightly lower than the South Okanagan, because the night time temperatures are lower. These cool nights are ideal as they allow the vines to rest before another hot day in the summer sunshine. The Cascade Mountains to the west keep rain and clouds away, ensuring that the vines receive plenty of sunshine. The vineyard is located on a bench above the Fraser River. The bench was created millennia ago when glaciers dominated the valley, depositing gravely soils while winds brought a thin loamy and sandy capping. These rapidly draining soils, poor in organic materials, provide a great foundation for the vines, which will need to work hard to produce quality fruit.
In May 2009 they planted 20 acres with six varietals: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. After careful consideration, they have chosen various rootstocks and clones to ensure early ripening and increase the complexity of the wines.
In 2011, they expect the vineyard to hang ripe with grapes for the first time and to be ready to turn into carefully crafted wines.
Firefly Maple Ridge is pleased to now have in stock their award winning 2007 Meritage soon to be followed by their fantastic Cabernet Franc and Rose.

Beer of the Week - Driftwood's Cuveé D'Hiver
A favorite brewery of the Firefly team, we are happy to have the "winter batch" on our shelves. The Cuveé D'Hiver is made from barley grown solely on the Saanich Peninsula and malted by master malter Mike Doehnel.
It is made with one of the most unique Belgian yeast strains in existence. It is a pale gold, with a delicate effervescence matched with a fruity nose and a tangy finish.
Pair with poultry, cheese pastas, or goulash
Wine of the Week - Avalon 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon
Named after the Arthurian legend paradise, Avalon Winery focuses just on one grape, Cabernet Sauvignon. Their wines are flavorful and original, without breaking the bank.
The 2008 vintage was a challenging one with the odd spring frost and rain and as a result, the crops were a bit smaller than usual. Winemaker Alex Cose took this as a challenge and was able to extract more color and flavor due to the higher skin contact to juice ratio. The grapes were cold soaked for two days prior to fermentation to preserve this intensity.
This wine has tones of cherries, boysenberries, chocolate and was aged in both French and American barrels for 18 months before bottling
Pairs best with burgers, roast beef, sausages, or on its own
